Shin / Mind / Heart
Original Zen calligraphy (shodo) by Zen monk and artist Peter Cutler.
The kanji shin means both mind and heart. In the Japanese language there is no separation. We begin Zen calligraphy by learning and practicing the formal ways of kanji. As our practice develops so does our mind, our shin. It becomes empty and clear, available to life and reality. Then something interesting happens.
As attachment to the personal self dissolves, the brush takes on a life of its own. It begins to teach us. In this Zen calligraphy, the first and third dot join and take on the appearance of a two headed snake. The brush was teaching me that the mind has two aspects, the conditioned mind of thoughts, knowledge, opinions and suffering and the awakened mind unattached, empty and clear of all conditioning.

About Peter Cutler
