"My house burned down.
Now I can see the moon."
Haiku by 17th century poet Mizuta Masahide.
This is a famous Zen poem. The moon is often used as a symbol in Zen for enlightenment. We accumulate a house filled with not only possessions but thoughts and beliefs as well. Only when this house burns down, when all attachments have gone up in smoke, can the moon of enlightenment be clearly seen.
