It is important to understand and practice formal Japanese kanji (calligraphy) until this skill becomes natural. But Zen calligraphy is a bit different. Also called shodo or hitsuzendo, Zen calligraphy is original, spontaneous and flows from an empty mind. You can find many beautiful examples of formal traditional kanji on the internet today. True Zen calligraphy is a bit harder to find. It flows from the awakened mind and transmits something far deeper than the symbols that are seen.
